IEP

An IEP is an Individualized Education Plan, which has been specially designed for any student with special needs. A student who has been identified as having special needs must be assessed to determine the nature and extent of his/her needs in order to create the optimal learning environment. Special Needs Officer will then meet up with the classroom teacher, parent(s) or legal guardian(s) and if appropriate the student, to help determine the student’s need and plan the appropriate educational strategies and environment.

The IEP is a system for spelling out where the student is, where he should be going, how he will get there, how long it will take, and how to tell if and when he has achieved the goals set. Thus, a good IEP serves as a guide for meeting the challenges posed by a student’s disability.

This plan is used to set specific learning targets for individual students over a pre determined period of time. Each stage of the IEP will be completed with a review of the achievements made and the strategies used. In setting new targets, the strategies to achieve these should also be discussed as should the approached to assessing and monitoring further progress.

IEP formats may vary across the schools and it may go beyond the requirements to include additional information. The overall responsibility for the coordination of these plans lies with the Special Needs Officer in the school.
